Introduced in 1988 and produced for four years until 1992, the Leica R6 is a manual focus, 35mm SLR camera that uses Leicaflex-Leica R-mount lenses. The Leica R6 is an all-manual, mostly mechanical SLR and the first manual exposure-only camera made by Leica since the discontinuation of the Leicaflex SL2. The R6 requires battery power only for its light meter and the electronic self-timer, otherwise all other functions perform without batteries. Because of this, the Leica R6 was marketed toward professional photographers who could rely on a camera that would continue to work even in the event that their batteries died. The Leica R6's shutter is capable of speeds from 1s to 1/1000, with a Bulb mode for long exposure and a flash sync of 1/100. Metering modes include a center-weighted pattern or a 7° spot. There is, of course, no auto exposure capability. The camera has a mirror lock-up (also a first since the original Leicaflex), ability to attach a motor drive, TTL flash metering with compatible Metz SCA units, depth of field preview, the aforementioned electronic self-timer, and viewfinder diopter adjustment.
The R6 was succeed in 1992 by the R6.2 which had a 1/2000 top shutter speed.
